The Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) has issued a public health alert following a possible measles exposure at a Target store in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania Health Department . Health officials urge anyone who may have visited the location during the identified period to review their vaccination records and watch for symptoms of the highly contagious virus.

According to the Pennsylvania Health Department , an individual who subsequently tested positive for measles may have exposed other shoppers and employees at the Target store located in the 1700 block of Quentin Road on October 23, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Health officials have also highlighted the virus’s ability to spread through the air. Measles particles can remain infectious in the air and on contaminated surfaces for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area. This means individuals may potentially be exposed even without having direct contact with someone carrying the virus.

Symptoms and Incubation Period

Residents who may have been exposed are encouraged to monitor their health for symptoms. Initial signs of measles typically include fever, cough, a runny nose, and red, watery eyes. These symptoms are usually followed by a distinctive rash that typically begins on the head or face before spreading down the body.

According to health officials, symptoms can develop between seven and 21 days following exposure. Individuals should remain vigilant throughout this period and seek appropriate medical guidance if symptoms appear.

Vaccination Remains the Best Protection

The MMR vaccine remains the most effective way to prevent measles infection. Health authorities emphasise the importance of vaccination in reducing transmission and protecting individuals and communities against outbreaks.

The public health warning serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining up-to-date immunisation records, recognising early symptoms, and taking appropriate precautions following potential exposure to contagious diseases.
