China has announced that it has established the world’s largest healthcare system, with over 1.33 billion people enrolled in its basic medical insurance programme. According China’s healthcare network to official figures, the country’s national health insurance coverage has remained stable at around 95%, reflecting decades of investment aimed at expanding access to healthcare services.

The figures were released as part of China’s healthcare network broader efforts to showcase progress in public health and healthcare infrastructure. The government says the extensive insurance network has significantly improved access to medical care for citizens across both urban and rural areas.

Expanding Healthcare Infrastructure

China’s healthcare network has expanded rapidly in recent years. Official data indicates that the country now has more than 1.1 million medical and health institutions, ranging from large hospitals to community health centres and village clinics.

The healthcare system also includes approximately 10.09 million hospital beds and a workforce of 13.4 million health professionals, making it one of the largest medical networks in the world.

Authorities say continued investment in hospitals, digital healthcare services and primary care facilities has helped strengthen the country’s ability to meet growing healthcare demands, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Global Health Contributions Highlighted

Beyond its domestic healthcare achievements, China has also highlighted its role in supporting global public health initiatives.

According to the white paper titled More Just and Equitable Global Governance: China’s Principles, Proposals and Actions, the country has dispatched more than 30,000 medical workers to 77 countries and regions over the years.

The document states that Chinese medical teams have provided treatment to more than 300 million patients worldwide through overseas healthcare missions, reflecting Beijing’s long-standing medical assistance programmes in Asia, Africa, Latin America and other regions.

Focus on Public Health Cooperation

The white paper presents China’s healthcare achievements as part of its broader commitment to international cooperation and global governance. Chinese authorities argue that strengthening healthcare systems and expanding medical collaboration are essential to improving global public health security.

The publication also emphasises China’s continued support for international medical partnerships, disease prevention programmes and emergency health assistance.

While China describes its healthcare system as the world’s largest based on insurance coverage, healthcare infrastructure and workforce size, comparisons with other countries often vary depending on the metrics used, including healthcare quality, spending, accessibility and patient outcomes. Nonetheless, the latest figures underscore the scale of China’s healthcare network and its expanding role in international public health cooperation.
