U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell has provided a detailed update on his health after weeks of speculation surrounding his condition, revealing that he was briefly unconscious following a fall last month and has also been recovering from a mild case of pneumonia.

In a statement released on Sunday alongside a photograph with his wife, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican addressed public concerns about his well-being and ongoing recovery.

“You all know how folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older,” McConnell said. “Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct.”

Hospitalization and Ongoing Recovery

Mitch McConnell has been hospitalized since June 14 after emergency medical personnel responded to his home following reports of an unconscious individual. According to the senator, doctors have ruled out several serious medical conditions.

“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages,” he said. “But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital.”

During his hospitalization, McConnell also developed a mild case of pneumonia, which he said has been treated while he received medical care. Although physicians are still working to determine the cause of the incident, the senator noted that his recovery has progressed steadily.

He has since been transferred from the hospital to a rehabilitation center, where he is undergoing physical therapy aimed at rebuilding strength and reducing the risk of future falls.

Senate Duties Remain on Hold

While Mitch McConnell continues to recover, his medical team has not yet cleared him to return to the Senate floor. Despite the temporary absence, he said he remains engaged with his staff and Republican colleagues on legislative matters.

The senator reiterated that his decision to retire at the conclusion of his current term in January reflected the physical demands of serving in the Senate. However, he emphasized that he intends to complete the remainder of his term and continue representing Kentucky until then.

A History of Recent Health Challenges

Mitch McConnell has experienced several health-related setbacks in recent years. A childhood polio survivor, he was hospitalized in early 2025 after experiencing flu-like symptoms and has had multiple falls over the past few years.

In 2023, he suffered a concussion following a fall and later drew national attention after freezing during two public appearances. He also sustained minor injuries in another fall in 2024. His latest hospitalization has once again placed his health under close public scrutiny as he continues his recovery.
