The Government of Ontario has announced its support for wHealth Ignite, a new accelerator program designed to help seed-stage women’s health startups scale their businesses and bring innovative healthcare solutions to market. Operated by Innovation Factory and its subsidiary Femtech Canada, the initiative will support 10 Ontario-based startups focused on advancing women’s health technologies.
The investment forms part of the province’s broader strategy to strengthen women’s participation in the economy while fostering innovation in one of Canada’s fastest-growing healthcare sectors.
Driving Innovation Through Strategic Support
Funding for the accelerator comes through the Ontario Women’s Economic Leadership and Legacy (WELL) Fund, which will distribute $5.5 million this year to projects that promote women’s economic advancement and support survivors of human trafficking.
Through wHealth Ignite, participating entrepreneurs will receive comprehensive business development support, including strategic mentorship, investor feedback, brand-building assistance, and opportunities for national exposure. The program is designed to equip founders with the resources and industry connections needed to accelerate commercialization and attract investment.
Participants will also engage with experts from organizations including Google, the Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship, and Spring, with the latter offering eligible startups the opportunity to secure up to $100,000 in equity investment.
Strengthening Canada’s Femtech Ecosystem
Innovation Factory CEO David Carter highlighted the significant economic potential of women’s health innovation, describing the sector as one of Canada’s most promising growth opportunities. He noted that the accelerator will provide emerging femtech entrepreneurs with the expertise, networks, and market access required to transform innovative ideas into commercially successful businesses.
By nurturing early-stage ventures, the initiative also aims to strengthen Ontario’s position as a hub for healthcare innovation while addressing long-standing gaps in women’s health research and technology.
Building a Stronger Future for Women’s Economic Leadership
The launch of wHealth Ignite aligns with Ontario’s broader commitment to invest $41 million over the next three years to advance women’s economic empowerment across the province.
According to Michael Parsa, Ontario’s Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, the accelerator represents Canada’s first milestone-driven program dedicated exclusively to women’s health innovation. He said the initiative is expected to strengthen the sector by increasing the retention, advancement, and leadership of women entrepreneurs while supporting the development of healthcare solutions that improve outcomes for women across Canada.
With Canada’s women’s health market projected to reach $27 billion by 2040, the program is positioned to play a key role in driving both economic growth and healthcare innovation.
