Cleveland Clinic has opened two state-of-the-art research facilities on its Main Campus, marking a major milestone in what the healthcare organization describes as the largest research investment in its more than 100-year history.

Together, the new buildings span approximately 300,000 square feet, house more than 700 employees and provide nearly 30 laboratories and core research service areas. The expansion significantly increases Cleveland Clinic’s capacity for scientific discovery, advanced laboratory research and high-performance computational work.

Building Ohio’s Innovation Ecosystem

The facilities were developed with support from the State of Ohio and JobsOhio as part of the Cleveland Innovation District, a public-private initiative designed to strengthen research, education, job creation and commercialization across the state.

Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Tom Mihaljevic said the new facilities would accelerate scientific discovery while reinforcing Cleveland’s position as a destination for healthcare, research and innovation.

The buildings are designed around collaboration, bringing together scientists, clinicians and innovators. Their infrastructure includes advanced laboratories, open collaborative spaces, classrooms, offices and a café, alongside landscaped green spaces and walking paths that create a new entrance to the southeast portion of the Main Campus.

Purpose-Built Research Infrastructure

The approximately 170,000-square-foot northeast building houses specialized laboratories and several of Cleveland Clinic’s fastest-growing research programs.

The 120,000-square-foot northwest facility focuses on specialty research and core services, providing investigators with access to advanced technologies, equipment and scientific expertise supporting laboratory, translational and clinical research.

The expansion builds on Cleveland Clinic’s earlier investments. In 2023, the organization opened 45,000 square feet of renovated research space, including new laboratories and computational offices. It has also established a specialized infectious-disease laboratory for developing diagnostics, treatments and vaccines.

Jobs and Research Growth

Since the Cleveland Innovation District launched in 2021, Cleveland Clinic and its partners have made substantial progress against their development targets. The organization has created nearly 2,000 jobs associated with the initiative—double its original goal of 1,000 full-time-equivalent positions.

The initiative has also supported more than 3,700 degrees and certificates through 129 educational programs, alongside major research partnerships.

Designed by Cleveland Clinic Buildings + Design with HOK Architects and Vanderweil Engineers, the new facilities were constructed by Gilbane Building and partially funded through philanthropic contributions.

The investment underscores Cleveland Clinic’s broader ambition to connect research, technology and clinical care—and translate scientific breakthroughs into better outcomes for patients.
