Cleveland Clinic has launched a drone-based prescription delivery programme, becoming the first U.S. health system to implement a long-term drone service for delivering medications directly to patients’ homes. The initiative aims to improve access to essential medicines while enhancing the convenience and efficiency of healthcare delivery.

The first successful deliveries were completed in and around Beachwood, Ohio, with operations being managed by drone logistics company Zipline.

Initial Rollout Focuses on Beachwood Area

The programme currently serves patients living within a five-mile radius of Cleveland Clinic’s Beachwood Administrative Campus, which functions as the operational hub for the drone fleet. Initially, the service is available to eligible patients already enrolled in Cleveland Clinic’s pharmacy home delivery programme for select prescription medications.

Participation in the drone delivery service is voluntary, and patients are not charged any additional fee.

Looking ahead, Cleveland Clinic plans to expand the programme to additional locations while broadening the range of items delivered to include laboratory samples, medically tailored meals and other healthcare supplies.

Technology Enhances Patient Convenience

The drone delivery initiative is designed to provide faster and more convenient access to prescribed medications, particularly for patients who may face transportation or mobility challenges.

According to Cleveland Clinic, the programme reflects its broader strategy of leveraging emerging technologies to improve healthcare accessibility and patient experience. By integrating autonomous delivery systems into its pharmacy services, the health system aims to strengthen its home delivery capabilities and extend care beyond traditional clinical settings.

Autonomous Delivery Without Landing

The service operates using Zipline’s autonomous electric drones, which are designed to complete deliveries without landing at a patient’s home.

Once a prescription is prepared, a pharmacy technician places the medication into a secure loading compartment. The drone autonomously retrieves the package and flies to the delivery location. Upon arrival, it remains approximately 300 feet above the ground while lowering the package in a delivery pod attached to a tether. After the medication is safely deposited, the pod retracts, allowing the drone to return to its charging station.

Patients are able to monitor the progress of their deliveries through Cleveland Clinic’s MyChart patient portal.

Expansion Planned, With Safety at the Forefront

Patients eligible for drone delivery are notified through their electronic patient portal. At present, controlled substances are excluded from the programme.

Zipline, the technology partner behind the initiative, is recognised as the world’s largest autonomous delivery service. Since launching its first operations in 2016, the company has completed tens of millions of medical deliveries worldwide.

The company states that each drone performs more than 500 safety checks every second during flight. Cleveland Clinic and Zipline have also worked together to ensure the programme complies with all applicable aviation regulations and technical requirements.

Innovation Reshaping Healthcare Delivery

The collaboration reflects a growing trend toward integrating advanced technologies into healthcare logistics to improve patient access and operational efficiency. By reducing delivery times and eliminating the need for patients to travel for eligible prescriptions, the programme is expected to enhance continuity of care while supporting the evolving demands of modern healthcare.

As Cleveland Clinic expands the initiative to additional services and locations, drone-based delivery could become an increasingly important component of patient-centred healthcare models in the United States.
