Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei believes the artificial intelligence industry’s best path to winning over a skeptical public is not through bigger promises, but by delivering tangible results.

In a rare post on X, Dario Amodei acknowledged growing public mistrust of AI and argued that repeated claims about the technology transforming healthcare and solving major global challenges have lost their impact. He said the industry must demonstrate its value through breakthroughs that directly improve people’s lives.

From Promises to Results

Dario Amodei argued that saying AI could cure cancer has become so common that many people now view the claim as little more than a cliché. In his view, the strongest criticism of AI companies, including Anthropic, is that they have yet to fulfil many of their ambitious promises to benefit society.

His answer is straightforward: AI needs to produce results that are difficult to dismiss. Actually helping cure cancer, he suggested, would do more to change public perceptions than another round of optimistic predictions.

Growing Public Unease

The comments come as the AI industry faces mounting criticism over its rapid expansion. Technology companies are investing billions in data centers, raising concerns among communities about energy consumption and infrastructure. At the same time, AI firms face scrutiny over the use of copyrighted material to train models and the potential impact of automation on employment.

Public sentiment reflects some of those concerns. A recent Pew Research Center survey found that roughly half of Americans felt the growing presence of AI in their daily lives made them “more concerned than excited.”

Amodei himself has frequently highlighted the risks associated with increasingly capable AI. In a June essay, he warned that Anthropic’s newer models could create serious challenges for cybersecurity, financial systems, critical infrastructure and national security. He has also previously predicted that AI could eliminate a substantial share of entry-level jobs.

Debate Over AI Warnings

Dario Amodei’s cautionary approach has not gone unchallenged. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis recently argued that some AI leaders have been overly confident in making dire predictions about the technology’s future and urged the industry to moderate its rhetoric.

The debate reflects a broader challenge for AI companies: balancing ambitious visions with credible evidence. For Amodei, the clearest way forward is ultimately through measurable achievements that demonstrate AI can deliver meaningful benefits beyond the hype.
