For many people, coffee is the go-to solution for beating morning fatigue or overcoming the afternoon energy slump. However, Nutrition Experts & dietitians say that while caffeine can provide a quick boost, lasting energy depends on eating a nutritious, well-balanced breakfast.

According to registered dietitian Valerie Agyeman, the body derives its energy primarily from nutrients rather than caffeine. Carbohydrates serve as the main fuel source for the brain and muscles, while protein and healthy fats help sustain energy levels over a longer period. Foods such as oatmeal, yoghurt, eggs and fresh fruit provide the calories and nutrients needed to keep the body functioning efficiently throughout the day.

Instead of replacing breakfast with coffee, Agyeman recommends pairing the two. While coffee offers an immediate increase in alertness due to its caffeine content, a balanced meal provides the steady nourishment required to prevent energy crashes later in the day.

Coffee Can Be Part of a Healthy Routine

Nutrition Experts and registered dietitian Jaclyn London says unsweetened coffee and tea can fit comfortably into a healthy eating pattern. Research has shown that moderate caffeine consumption may improve alertness, concentration and even physical performance when consumed responsibly.

Both experts also challenge the common belief that coffee is a major cause of dehydration. They explain that, for most healthy adults, moderate coffee consumption does not significantly reduce hydration levels. Instead, feelings of fatigue after several cups of coffee are more likely to result from inadequate sleep, poor nutrition or insufficient overall fluid intake.

London notes that many people who experience an energy “crash” after coffee may actually be relying too heavily on caffeine instead of eating enough food or maintaining healthy lifestyle habits. Coffee, she says, is most effective when consumed alongside a nutritious meal rather than on an empty stomach.

Start the Day with Protein

Nutrition experts emphasize the importance of building a breakfast that combines protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. Protein-rich foods such as eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts and seeds can help promote satiety while providing a steady supply of energy.

Pairing these with whole grains, fruits or vegetables creates a balanced meal that supports blood sugar stability and sustained physical and mental performance. Such combinations also reduce the likelihood of hunger and fatigue between meals.

While individual nutritional needs vary, dietitians agree that beginning the day with a wholesome breakfast—rather than relying solely on caffeine—can help maintain consistent energy levels, improve concentration and support overall health throughout the day.
