VCU Health has reached a major construction milestone for the new Pauley Heart Center Pavilion, marking the progress of a facility designed to expand cardiovascular care, research, and education in Virginia.
The final structural beam was placed on the pavilion during an official “topping off” ceremony, a traditional construction milestone that signals the completion of the building’s main structural framework. Leaders from Virginia Commonwealth University, VCU Health, the City of Richmond and the Commonwealth of Virginia, along with community supporters, attended the event and signed the beam before it was lifted into position.
Expanding Cardiovascular Care
VCU President Michael Rao said the milestone brings the institution closer to strengthening cardiovascular services across the region. He highlighted the importance of the project as cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States.
The pavilion is intended to bring clinical care, research, and medical education together in one location. According to VCU, the facility will help expand access to cardiovascular services while supporting the training of future healthcare professionals and advancing heart-health research.
Diana Cantor, chair of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Authority Board of Directors, said the pavilion reflects VCU Health’s commitment to making comprehensive cardiovascular medicine more accessible to patients across Virginia.
Bringing Services Under One Roof
The new pavilion will include clinical and laboratory research areas, education and training classrooms, advanced imaging and diagnostic services, procedural care, cardiac rehabilitation and laboratory services.
By bringing these capabilities together in a single facility, VCU Health expects clinicians, researchers and other specialists to work more efficiently while providing patients with coordinated care.
The facility is also being designed as a new model for outpatient cardiovascular care in Virginia, combining diagnostic, treatment and recovery services within the same setting.
Meeting a Growing Need
VCU Health CEO Marlon Levy said the demand for accessible and complex cardiovascular care in Central Virginia continues to grow. He described the construction milestone as an opportunity to recognize the healthcare, research, and training expected to take place in the new pavilion.
The facility is expected to serve patients and families while supporting broader efforts to improve cardiovascular outcomes across the region. As construction moves forward, VCU Health says the pavilion will play an important role in bringing together advanced medical services, research, and education to strengthen heart care for Virginians.
