Smart Contact Lenses Could Arrive by 2030, Offering AI and Health Monitoring Features

Smart Contact Lenses Could Arrive by 2030 | Healthcare Times Magazine

Smart contact lenses powered by artificial intelligence could become available as early as 2030, potentially transforming how people access digital information, monitor their health and interact with technology. Dubai-based deep-tech company Xpanceo has spent the past five years developing smart lenses designed to bring computing capabilities directly to the human eye.

More than 140 million people worldwide are estimated to wear contact lenses, creating a potential market for technologies that combine vision correction with advanced digital features. Xpanceo’s founders, managing partner Roman Axelrod and chief technology officer Valentyn Volkov, are exploring how these devices could extend beyond traditional eyewear.

Bringing AI Directly to the Eye

Xpanceo envisions smart contact lenses as personal AI assistants that allow users to access applications and digital information without relying on smartphones or conventional screens. The technology could support augmented reality experiences, instant identity verification and hands-free access to data.

The company is also exploring specialised applications in aviation, motorsports and space exploration. In certain demanding environments, the lenses could work alongside a companion helmet to provide relevant information while allowing users to focus on their surroundings and tasks.

Another potential application involves health monitoring. Human tears contain biological information that could help sensors detect certain health-related indicators. By analysing tear fluid, smart lenses could potentially monitor selected aspects of a person’s health, similar to how wearable devices track specific bodily measurements.

However, these capabilities remain under development, and their practical applications will depend on further technological progress and validation.

How the Technology Works?

Xpanceo’s smart contact lenses are designed to combine several miniature components, including a display, biosensors, a microbattery and an antenna. These elements would allow the lens to present information and collect data while maintaining a compact form suitable for the eye.

The lenses are expected to operate as part of a wireless system rather than functioning independently. An external companion device, positioned at the side of the user’s head, would contain a camera, microphone and earphone.

This companion device would handle much of the computing and energy storage required to operate the lenses. It would also provide wireless charging and maintain a continuous connection with the lenses through specialised antenna technology.

Challenges Ahead

Although smart contact lenses could offer a new way to interact with digital services, developers must overcome challenges involving power supply, comfort, safety and reliable connectivity.

If these obstacles can be addressed, the technology could reshape wearable computing by bringing AI-powered information directly into users’ field of vision.
